How to Unclog a Drain, and When to Call a Plumber
Most slow drains clear with a plunger, a trap cleaning or a small snake. This guide shows how to unclog a drain safely, fixture by fixture, and when to stop and call a plumber.
Emergency? Call now, 24/7(737) 717-0737- Count the clogged fixturesOne means local. Several means the main line.
- Plunge firstSeal the overflow and push steadily.
- Clean the trapBucket under it, then hand tools.
How to unclog a drain: the short answer
- One slow drain: plunge, clean the trap, snakeThat order solves most sink and tub clogs.
- Several slow drains: stopThe main line is blocked and a snake will not reach it.
- Skip mixed chemicalsThey burn and can damage pipes.
- Toilets need a flange plungerUse a cup plunger on sinks and tubs.
- Repeat clogs are a messageAsk for a camera look if the problem returns.
How to unclog a drain: first work out which drain and how bad
The right method depends on where the clog sits. One slow sink is a different problem from several fixtures backing up together.
| What you see | Where the clog probably is | Start with | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| One sink drains slowly | Trap or branch line under that sink | Plunger, then trap cleaning | It returns within days |
| Tub or shower water pools around your ankles | Hair and soap in the tub trap or drain | Hair tool, then small snake | Water gurgles in other drains |
| Toilet will not flush, nothing else affected | Toilet trap or the short drain below it | Flange plunger | Plunger does nothing after several tries |
| Kitchen sink and dishwasher back up | Grease and food in the kitchen line | Hot water, plunger, trap | Disposal and dishwasher both affected |
| Two or more fixtures back up, floor drain gurgles | Main drain or sewer line | Stop and call | Immediately |
| Sewage in the lowest tub or shower | Main line blockage | Stop using water, call | Immediately |
One clue separates a local clog from a main-line problem: how many fixtures are slow. One means local. Several means the shared line, and DIY tools rarely reach that far. For the second case, clogged drain and sewer line repair explain what a plumber does.
What you need and what to keep away from
Most of the work is done with a few tools you may already own. Some products make the job worse, so know which to avoid.
Kit and cautions
A cup plunger for sinks, a flange plunger for toilets, a bucket, rubber gloves, a flashlight, a pair of channel-lock pliers and an old towel cover most jobs. A hand-crank drum snake and a plastic hair-removal strip are worth owning. Eye protection helps, because a trap can splash back.
Chemical drain cleaners are a different matter. They can burn skin and eyes, and they can damage pipes. Never mix products. Never pour one on top of another or into a drain still holding a different cleaner. If a cleaner does not work, the standing water in the drain is now caustic, and a plumber has to handle it. For that reason many plumbers advise skipping them. See drain cleaning for the safer alternatives.
- Cup plungerSinks, tubs and showers.
- Flange plungerToilets. The rubber flap seals the bowl outlet.
- Bucket, towels, glovesFor the trap, which holds dirty water.
- Small drum snakeReaches past the trap into the branch line.
- Plastic hair stripPulls out hair without scratching the pipe.
- Avoid: mixed chemicalsDangerous fumes and burns.
How to unclog a drain in a kitchen or bathroom sink
Work from the simplest step to the most hands-on one, and stop the moment the water runs freely.
Clear the surface
Remove the stopper or strainer and pull out what you can see. Bathroom stoppers often hold a hair clump.
Plunge properly
Plug the overflow with a wet rag. Put the cup flat over the drain, fill the sink a few inches, then push and pull with steady strokes for about twenty seconds.
Flush with hot water
After the water drops, run hot tap water for a minute. For grease, hot water helps. Boiling water can crack some plastic pipes, so hot from the tap is safer.
Clean the trap
Put the bucket under the U-bend. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with pliers, slide the trap off and empty it. Check the pipe stub in the wall too. Reassemble snug, not overtight.
Snake the branch
Feed the drum snake into the wall pipe, turn the handle and push through the resistance. Pull the snake out slowly and wipe it as you go.
Test and rinse
Run water for a few minutes and watch the trap for drips.
If the water pooled in one sink rises in the neighboring sink while you plunge, the two share a line and the clog is probably past the trap. That is a good moment to stop and read about hydro jetting or call for a snake with more reach.
How to unclog a drain in a tub, shower or toilet
These three behave differently from sinks. Tubs fill with hair and soap, and toilets hold a trap that works on a different principle.
Tub and shower
Remove the stopper or strainer. A hair clump is often within reach of a plastic strip or a bent wire. Run hot water, then plunge with the overflow plugged. If the tub drains slowly after that, a small snake through the drain opening can reach the trap.
For a toilet, use a flange plunger with the bowl about half full. Seal it, push gently first to push out air, then pump with steady strokes. If the bowl drains, flush once to test. If water rises, stop and use the shutoff valve behind the toilet. The toilet repair page covers flush faults, and bathtub drain repair covers stoppers and overflow plates.
| Fixture | Common blocker | Best DIY tool |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom sink | Hair, toothpaste, soap film | Plunger, trap cleaning |
| Tub | Hair and soap scum | Plastic strip, small snake |
| Shower | Hair under the cover | Strip, then plunger |
| Toilet | Overuse of paper, wipes, toys | Flange plunger |
| Kitchen sink | Grease, food scraps | Plunger, trap, snake |
Kitchen clogs, grease and garbage disposals
Kitchens clog differently from bathrooms. Fat that is liquid in the pan hardens in the pipe.
Turn off the disposal
Never put hands in a disposal. Switch off the power at the wall switch and the breaker before you reach in.
Check the dishwasher link
A dishwasher drain hose joins the disposal or the sink line. If the dishwasher backs up into the sink, clean the air gap and the hose connection.
Clear what you can see
Use tongs, not fingers. Remove food that has wedged in the hopper.
Plunge with both sides sealed
If there is a double sink, plug the other drain with a wet rag, then plunge.
Know the limit
Hardened grease farther down can need a snake or jetting. Hot water only moves it along.
If the disposal hums but will not turn, or jams repeatedly, the problem is the unit, not the drain. See garbage disposal repair. To keep the line clear, wipe greasy pans into the trash before washing and use a strainer in the sink.
Mistakes that turn a small clog into a bigger one
A few well-meant habits make drains worse. Knowing them saves a call.
Five common slips
Pouring boiling water on a stubborn clog is the first. It can soften or crack plastic pipe and loosen joints. Hot tap water does the job without the risk. Pushing a clog deeper with a wire coat hanger is another: it scratches pipe walls, which gives debris more to catch on, and it can wedge the clog tighter.
Running the garbage disposal against a clog, using a plunger on a drain with chemical cleaner in it and forcing a snake past a hard stop round out the list. If you are unsure, the cheapest step is a description over the phone. The 24 hour plumber page explains what happens on that call.
- Boiling water on plastic pipeUse hot tap water instead.
- Coat hangers and wireThey scratch the pipe and jam the clog.
- Plunging over chemicalsSplash-back burns skin and eyes.
- Forcing a snakeA hard stop may be a break or a root mass.
- Ignoring the second slow drainIt means the shared line is filling.
When to stop trying to unclog a drain yourself
Some situations are beyond a plunger and a snake. Pushing harder can make them worse or put you at risk.
Signs it is the main line
If several drains back up at once, or a toilet bubbles when you run the washing machine, the main line is blocked. A floor drain that fills, or sewage in the lowest tub, confirms it. Stop running water. A snake from a sink will not reach, and chemicals will not help.
A plumber can run a camera down the line to see what is there. Roots, a collapsed section or a belly in the pipe call for something other than a snake. Our sewer camera inspection page explains the process, and sewer line repair covers fixes. Clay soils in this region can shift and stress buried lines. That does not mean yours has a problem, only that a recurring clog may be worth a look. For wider coverage, how to choose a plumber helps you ask the right questions.
- Several fixtures slow or gurglingThe shared line is blocked.
- Sewage smell or sewage in a drainA backup. Stop using water.
- A clog that returns within daysSomething deeper is catching debris.
- The snake stops and will not advanceA solid obstruction, roots or a break.
- Standing water with chemical cleaner in itDo not touch it. Call.
What to do after the drain runs again
Clearing the clog is half of it. A few quick checks confirm that it is really gone.
Run water for several minutes
A drain that clears for a minute and slows again still has a partial blockage.
Check under the sink
Dry the trap and joints, run water, and look for drips at the slip nuts.
Test the neighbors
Run the nearest tub, sink or toilet to see whether they gurgle.
Clean the tools
Rinse the plunger and snake, and disinfect with a household cleaner.
If anything gurgles or the clog comes back within a week, that is a sign to book a cleaning with a longer reach, such as hydro jetting. It also helps to read signs of corroded pipes if the same drain keeps failing, since rough or narrowed pipe catches debris.
Habits that stop the next clog
Most clogs are made slowly. A few steady habits cut the number of slow drains you will meet.
| Habit | Why it works | Where it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Use drain strainers | Catches hair and food before it enters the pipe | Tubs, showers, kitchen sinks |
| Bin the grease | Fat hardens in the pipe and catches debris | Kitchen |
| Flush only paper and waste | Wipes marketed as flushable still clog lines | Toilets |
| Run hot water after each use | Moves soap film along before it hardens | Sinks and showers |
| Clean stoppers weekly | Stops hair building up under the cover | Bathroom sinks and tubs |
| Schedule a line cleaning if clogs repeat | Clears build-up before it blocks | Whole house |
Tree roots are a common cause of repeat clogs in buried lines. If your home has mature trees near the yard line, mention it when you call. Pages for plumber in San Marcos and plumber in Austin cover nearby towns, and drain cleaning in Austin covers that city.
When to call a plumber about a clogged drain
These are the points where more effort wastes time or causes damage.
More than one fixture is slow
The shared line is the problem.
Sewage in a tub or floor drain
Stop using water and call.
The clog returns every few weeks
Something deeper is catching debris.
A chemical cleaner did not work
The water in the pipe is now hazardous. Do not touch it.

How to unclog a drain without chemicals?
Start with a plunger, then clean the trap under the sink, then use a hand snake. Hot water from the tap helps with soap and grease. These steps are safer for your pipes and your skin than chemical cleaners.
How do I unclog a drain with standing water?
A cup plunger works best on standing water. Plug the overflow, seal the cup and pump steadily. If the water does not move, bail it into a bucket, remove the trap and clean it.
Does baking soda and vinegar unclog a drain?
It can loosen light soap film, but it will not move a real clog. Use it as a mild rinse, then flush with hot water. A hard clog needs a plunger or snake.
Why is my kitchen sink draining slowly?
Grease and food usually build up in the trap or branch line. Plunging, trap cleaning and a snake solve most cases. If the dishwasher also backs up, check the disposal link.
Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaner?
It is risky. The products can burn skin and eyes, give off fumes and damage some pipes. Never mix them. If one fails, leave the water alone and call a plumber.
How do I know if the main drain is clogged?
Several fixtures slow or gurgle at once, a toilet bubbles when the washer runs or a floor drain backs up. Stop using water and call.
How much does it cost to unclog a drain?
It depends on where the clog is, the tool needed, access and how many fixtures are affected. Ask about pricing when you call and describe which drains are slow.
Can I use a drain snake myself?
A small hand snake is fine for a sink or tub. Go slowly, stop if it jams and never force it through a toilet. Longer lines call for professional equipment.
Is a clogged drain an emergency?
If sewage is coming up or water is spilling into the house, yes. Same-day service is available, and the line is open 24/7. A single slow sink can wait for a day or two.
How can I stop drains clogging again?
Use strainers, bin the grease, flush only toilet paper and clean stoppers regularly. A scheduled cleaning helps if clogs keep returning. See how to find a water leak in your house if a drain issue seems linked to a leak.
